IRVINE / THE WORDS
What does compounded mean?
It means a medicine was prepared to order. The next question is why that preparation is needed for this patient.
THE PLAIN MEANING
Prepared for a particular need.
- Compounding
- Preparing a medicine by mixing or changing ingredients, rather than supplying a factory-made finished drug.
FDA is the Food and Drug Administration, the agency that reviews medicines in the U.S. In its description of compounding, this option serves someone with a medical need that an approved drug cannot meet.
At the September 2026 check, the compounded preparation itself was not FDA-approved.
ASK IT DIRECTLY
Why this version?
Ask what need the ready-made medicine cannot meet. Ask which change matters for you and how that reason is recorded.
A lower headline price leaves that question unanswered.
Who can prepare it?
Under one federal rule in September 2026, a licensed pharmacist or doctor could make the medicine using a prescription with your name on it.
Another rule let businesses registered with FDA make batches of medicine free of living germs, without a separate patient’s prescription for each batch.
Those businesses may be separate from pharmacies.
You still need a valid prescription to be supplied a prescription medicine; the batch-making rule does not remove that requirement.
Putting that business on FDA’s register did not approve the medicines it made, as of September 2026.
Can it simply copy a ready-made drug?
In September 2026, federal rules limited routine compounding of copies of available medicines.
The person writing the prescription had to find that, for the named patient, the change made an important difference from the ready-made drug.
FDA gives the example of changing a ready-made medicine because its dye causes an allergy for that patient.
Ask which change is needed for you and why it meets the rule.
The federal exception was not based on a cheaper price.
See what shortages changeWhat about the pharmacy in California?
As of September 2026, a pharmacy outside the state needed a California sterile-compounding licence before sending its sterile preparations here.
Sterile preparations are medicines made to be free of living germs.
