IRVINE / MONEY & CHECKS
Will insurance pay for it?
The drug name is only part of the question. The use, product and plan matter too.
ASK THE PLAN
Words your plan may use.
- Formulary
- The medicines a plan includes on its coverage list.
- Prior authorization
- The plan must review a request before it agrees to pay for the medicine.
Ask the plan about the exact finished product and reason it is being prescribed. Ask what your part of the bill would be.
Keep the answer in writing when possible.
What about a medical spending account?
- HSA or FSA
- Health savings account is what HSA stands for; flexible spending arrangement is the full name for FSA. Both accounts pay eligible medical expenses.
In September 2026, tax guidance tied weight-treatment expenses to a specific disease diagnosed by a physician, rather than general health goals.
Ask whoever runs the account which records are required.
Medicare has a use-based rule.
- Part D
- Medicare’s prescription drug benefit.
Ordinary Part D did not cover medicines used for weight loss at the September 2026 check.
The same medicine could be coverable for another accepted medical use, but the plan’s coverage rules still applied.
A use allowed under Medicare rules still needed the plan’s agreement to pay.
There is also a temporary programme.
- GLP-1
- A signal in the body that helps regulate appetite and blood sugar. Some weight medicines mimic its action.
The Medicare GLP-1 Bridge, checked in September 2026, gave eligible people access to certain weight medicines for a patient payment of $50 a month.
The published programme dates were a start of July 1, 2026 and an end of December 31, 2027.
A prescription, approval from the programme, and meeting its health and plan rules were all required; being on Medicare alone was not enough.
Adults aged 18 or over with a BMI of at least 35 could meet the weight test.
Height and weight are used to calculate the number called BMI.
Some people with a lower BMI could qualify with listed health problems, such as pre-diabetes or a past heart attack.
Type 2 diabetes meant using ordinary Part D coverage rules instead of this programme.
Separate Part D drug plans and certain Medicare Advantage plans with drug coverage could take part.
For 2026, the Bridge excluded anyone whose Part D plan had already paid for a GLP-1 medicine that year.
Ask your doctor and plan to check the full rules, including other health exclusions and the required food and activity plan.
The payment did not count toward Part D’s deductible. That is the amount paid before coverage starts.
It also did not count toward the yearly cap on patient spending for covered drugs.
