IRVINE / THE WORDS

# Are weight medicines part of this?

Some are. Ask which ingredient does the work, what name is on the package, and why it is being proposed.

GET BOTH NAMES

## Names that may come up.

GLP-1 is a body signal that helps control blood sugar and appetite. Medicines that copy this signal are often called GLP-1 drugs.

FDA reviews medicines in the U.S. The initials stand for Food and Drug Administration.

In September 2026, approved medicines included Ozempic and Wegovy, whose ingredient is semaglutide, plus Mounjaro and Zepbound, whose ingredient is tirzepatide.

Ozempic and Mounjaro have approvals for type 2 diabetes; Wegovy and Zepbound have approvals for weight management.

Some have other approved uses too; these examples do not list every use.

Ask which medicine is proposed and which approved use applies to it.

## A name may cover more than a shot.

In September 2026, both Ozempic and Wegovy names covered injection and tablet products.

Ask about the exact form. A familiar brand name alone leaves room for confusion.

## What changed for compounded copies?

National shortage

An entry on FDA’s list of medicines in short supply, rather than a local pharmacy being out of stock.

The September 2026 check found that FDA’s national shortage list no longer included semaglutide injections or tirzepatide.

FDA’s extra time before enforcing certain rules against making copies of those medicines ended in 2025.

In September 2026, the person writing a patient’s prescription had to decide whether a change made an important difference from the ready-made medicine.

FDA describes the example of a patient whose dye allergy calls for a version of the medicine that omits that dye.

A cheaper price alone did not meet that rule.

## Is compounded the same as generic?

No: FDA lists that claim among misleading descriptions of compounded drugs, as of September 2026.

Generic medicine

A medicine approved as a copy of a brand product.

As of September 2026, no approved, marketable semaglutide or tirzepatide generic existed in the U.S.

Generic liraglutide was different: approved versions existed, including ones with weight-management uses, as of September 2026.
