YOUR NOTES

## Put your concern into words.

- What led you to seek care? What would you like help with at this visit?

- What medicines and supplements are you taking?

- What past health issues, allergies or treatment questions do you want to discuss?

- What product name appeared in the ad or proposal?

Bring those notes to the person treating you. Ask what else they need to know.

## Ask for the reason.

What condition are we addressing? What makes this option fit? What other choices can we discuss?

There is room to ask again if the first answer is hard to follow.

## Does every prescription need blood tests?

As of September 2026, no general federal prescribing rule required blood tests before every prescription.

State rules or special safety rules for a particular medicine may still require tests; this general federal finding does not settle those questions.

Ask the person writing the prescription which rules apply to this medicine and which tests your health needs.

The general rule is not a reason to skip tests that the person treating you considers needed.

Ask what each proposed test would help decide and how its result would change the plan.

## Leave with the follow-up questions answered.

- How do I send a question after this visit?

- Who reviews test results, and how will I hear back?

- Who supplies the medicine if a prescription is issued?

- What costs apply now and at a refill?

The Federation of State Medical Boards said in its May 2026 guidance that patients must be able to ask their own follow-up questions.

That is guidance for medical practice, rather than a law that applies throughout the country.
